The Telangana Performance and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) welcomes the union’s interior minister Amit Shah’s announcement of the “Sahkar Taxi”, a cooperative ride-hailing service.
According to TGPWU’s Shaik Salauddin, the move aims to cancel intermediaries and ensure fair income for drivers. He said empowering workers is a need for the hour, especially in performance work.
He said unions have been working for collective structures owned by workers, allowing drivers and delivery workers to operate independently of the exploitation platform model. Most workers expressed interest in joining the cooperative, he said.
“We urge the government to ensure that this initiative is implemented quickly and effectively. Performance and platform staff have been subject to conditions of exploitation for too long. The cooperation model can provide a fair alternative – a worker directly sets his own terms and benefits from labor. We also call for the inclusion of existing unions and collectives in the cooperation framework to shape the cooperation framework,” Mr Salauddin said. ”
He added that TGPWU will closely monitor the launch of the “Sahkar Taxi” and interact with the government.
