Pete Hegseth accused of theft
Hergs’ paper entitled “Modern Presidential Speech and the Cold War Environment” was reviewed by three theft experts. They did not realize the author’s identity before evaluating the work.
In one example, Hegseth wrote about President George W. Bush’s reaction to the first attack on the World Trade Center in New York on 9/11.
“Bush looked distracted and dull after Card’s whisper, but continued to listen to the second graders, joked that they were ‘like sixth grade reading’,” the current defense secretary wrote.
Shortly after the attack, a Washington article published in 2001 read: “Bush looked distracted and gloomy after Card’s whisper, but continued to listen to the second graders and quickly smiled again. What is the truth? The plagiarism detection model identified 12 paragraphs in the paper, and the newspaper consulted which experts only believed to be 8 significant significance. The remaining four, though not alone, are considered “stolen of some form.”
Although all three experts agree that the passages violate Princeton’s rules of academic integrity, they differ in assessing severity – some believe the violations are serious, while others believe they are too small to deserve attention.
James M. Lang, the author of Cheating Course: Learning from Academic Dishonesty, describes the case as “boundary,” telling Princetonists: “There are no silver bullets here; in terms of the stolen example, no smoking guns.”
Instead, he noted that the situation was more “gray, not black and white”, with about half of the cases of theft being severe and the other half being relatively small.

One example is the expert disagreement is a passage from the Secretary of Defense on former President Kennedy’s speech on Wall Berlin.

Although Reeves (even if it refers to a specific sentence) is cited in Hergs’ paper, no marking is used. Although Lang believes the problem is serious, Jonathan Bailey, the burglary, told Princetonism today that the violation is not particularly serious.

“Even more direct people, they usually still only involve one or two sentences,” Bailey explained. Guy Curtis, an academic integrity researcher at the University of Western Australia, noted that the paper did violate the university’s rules and involved uncategorized copies.
“Once you get 10 to 15 words in a row, it may not be accidental to match something else,” Curtis said.
Despite this, no formal regulations on stolen have been found after graduation. Bailey suggests that these situations may be due to negligence rather than intent. “This doesn’t fit the pattern of people who deliberately, maliciously try to steal their own way,” he said. “It seems more like a situation where bad writing practices and weaker methods are.”

Pentagon responds
After the daily article by Princeton University, Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell issued a statement to the military company showing his support for Heggs.
“Secretary Heggs wrote five books. He wrote hundreds of papers and columns. During the confirmation process, each word was worked with every media in the country by top left-wing law firms.”
Heggs faced scrutiny recently at two signal group chat incidents and a major Pentagon departure. The first involves a chat set up by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who Hegseth shares the Houthi attack plan. A second chat involving his family and attorney discussed similar things, although Heggs insisted it was “informal” and “uncategorized.”
