Photographer Recording Manual Clear ACJ Awards in Chennai

: M. Palanikumar, a Chennai-based photographer who works with the Indian Rural People's Archives, won the Ashish Yechury Memorial Award this year for recording the lives of sanitary workers' families who were illegally forced to undergo manual removal.

He won the award, he said, over the past 10 years, he has witnessed at least 85 deaths while documenting the families.

ACJ Investigative News Award was awarded to freelance journalist Hemant Gairola for his article “Banks want forged notes to obtain the currency of the Modi government flagship program illegally from clients and published in Article 14 of the website.

The KP Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism went jointly to Vandana Menon for her story 'Rajashtan's elderly are victims of digital murder: eKYC gaps leave lakhs without pension' and the team of Shamsheer Yousaf, Monica Jha and Sriram Vittalamurthy for their multimedia series 'Breaking the Nets: An Oral History of India's Fisherwomen'.

The jury consists of senior journalist Kalpana Sharma, independent journalist Priya M. Menon and documentary photographer Harikrishna Katragadda.
