FTC vs Meta: Antitrust trial begins. Mark Zuckerberg and other key witnesses

Meta Platforms, parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, fought a court battle with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday (April 14). The antitrust trial has the potential to lead to the breakdown of Mark Zuckerberg’s tech empire, marking the most significant legal challenge Meta faces in its 20-year history.
The opening argument begins – Day 1
Mark Zuckerberg testifies
Fungal Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg testified in a Washington, D.C. court Monday, defending his company from a monopoly charge on federal charges.
FTC accuses meta-anti-competitive behavior
The FTC claims Meta has effectively stifled competition and consolidated its strength by acquiring potential competitors Instagram and WhatsApp.
“There is nothing wrong with Meta innovation,” said Daniel Matheson, chief attorney for the FTC. “What happened next was a problem.”
The FTC believes Meta’s strategy is to “eliminate immediate threats” by buying competitors rather than surpassing their competitors. The agency is seeking to force the Meta divestitures from both platforms and provide advance notice for future acquisitions.
Yuan defends its acquisition
In response, Facebook’s parent company Meta rejected the charges of monopoly. Mark Hansen, the attorney representing Mehta, stressed that both Instagram and WhatsApp are thriving under the company’s management.
“These two applications have grown significantly under Meta ownership,” Hansen said. “There is no evidence that the meta is a monopoly.”
He added that Meta presents a challenge to the FTC’s monopoly argument: “How does the FTC maintain such a monopoly case when it never charges a penny to users?”
The future of the Yuan is for
If the FTC wins, META can be ordered to spin off Instagram and WhatsApp, the company’s key revenue generators. The outcome of the trial may set a precedent for how the U.S. government is actively pursuing large-scale technology mergers.
Key Witnesses and Timelines
The trial was chaired by U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg and is expected to last for several weeks. Key figures in anticipation of testimony include:
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and Founder
Sheryl Sandberg, former Meta Coo
Former CTO Mike Schroepfer
Instagram Co-founder Kevin Systrom
Executives at competitor social media companies
The opening debate ended Monday morning, with witness testimony set to begin in the afternoon.
What’s wrong?
The FTC filed its first lawsuit against Meta in 2020 during Donald Trump’s presidency. In 2021, Judge Boothberg initially dismissed the case, citing a lack of sufficient evidence. However, the FTC later filed a revised complaint that was allowed to proceed, leading to the start of Monday’s trial.
The trial represents a key key in the ongoing antitrust law enforcement battle in the digital age and whether pixel platforms can be held accountable for past acquisitions that reshape the social media landscape.
