Polavaram Authority writes to CWC for drainage congestion study on 6 flow flow

Hyderabad

As the Telangana government requires long-term requirements, the Polavaram Project Administration (PPA) has written to the Central Water Commission (CWC) that a drainage congestion study was conducted on six flows in Telangana due to the Polavaram project.

In a recent letter to the CWC Chairman, the PPA said that the technical meetings chaired by the CWC Chairman were held on October 7, 2022; January 25, 2023; April 3, 2023 and August 28, 2024, following the Supreme Court’s instructions of September 6, 2022.

During the meeting, Telangana raised questions about submersion due to the Polavaram project, and concluded that the areas affected by submersion along the Kinnerasani and Murreduvagu Rivers and along the Murreduvagu Rivers, as directed by the National Green Tribunal of 18 September 2020.

Further, it was decided to take up a joint survey in respect of 6-7 big streams joining below the full reserveir level of Polavaram project in Telangana to check the backwater effect of the project, to check the Godavari and streams levels at Bhadrachalam and heavy water plant at Manuguru for getting a clear picture of submergence and to address the issues related to submergence in Telangana due to Polavaram at FRL.

However, as Telangana has been insisting on a merger action to resolve the first two issues, and Andhra Pradesh said it was retained in Telangana’s 6-7 stream, demarcating areas affected by Kinnerasani and Murreduvagu could not be completed.

At an interstate meeting held on April 8, it was decided that with the support of the CWC, the PPA supported the drainage congestion study in 6-7 large streams on the Kinnerasani and Murreduvagu Rivers routes.

The PPA requires CWC to conduct drainage congestion studies on 6 streams due to the backwater of the Polavaram Project in Telangana (CWC) involved in the post-water study of Kinnerasani and Murreduvagu.
