Police inspectors are fined and illegally detained

Since the State Human Rights Commission found him guilty and directed him to pay Rs 50,000 in compensation, it turned out to be expensive to detain the suspect’s unrecorded property stolen.

The incident dates back to March 2024, when Bharatinagar police arrested defendant Syed Asif during a mobile robbery case reported on January 13 in Nehrupuram. The defendant allegedly told police that he had sold the phone to Nayeem Pasha, and police subsequently detained him, allegedly retracted the phone and detained him along with the ASIF on March 29.

Police officers allegedly asked Pasha’s wife for Rs 50,000 when she went to the station to ask about her husband. She was unable to pay, and she filed a complaint to the SHRC against police’s illegal detention of her husband.

According to the complaint, the SHRC team led by Vice-President Mohan Sy visited the station and questioned Pasha, police officers, witnesses and inspectors. Officials also verified CCTV camera footage to determine the charges.

Even if he was arrested for receiving allegations of stolen property, no charges were imposed against Pasha, nor was he arrested in court, the investigation showed.

According to the report of the fact-finding team, SHRC has recommended that the chief secretary pay Pasha a 50,000 rupees compensation to infringe on his rights and recover the compensation from the inspector’s salary. The Commission also requested the Government to submit a report on action within one month.
