Poonam Gupta Appoints RBI DY Governor: Statement

Mumbai, on April 3 (PTI) the government has appointed NCAER Director-General Poonam Gupta as RBI deputy governor, the central bank said in a statement on Thursday.
It said that appointments are three years from the date of joining the position or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
After MD Patra left the office in January, the position of RBI lieutenant governor was opened. He is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).
With the appointment of Gupta, all four positions of the lieutenant governor have now been filled.
The first bimonthly MPC meeting of this fiscal year is scheduled to be held from April 7 to 9.
Currently, Gupta is the Director General of the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER), the largest economic policy think tank in India.
She is also a member of the Economic Advisory Committee of the 16th Finance Committee and the Convener of the Advisory Committee. After nearly two decades of working at the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, D.C., she joined NCAER in 2021.
Gupta teaches at the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Maryland (USA) and serves as a visitor at Delhi ISI. She has also served as RBI Chairman Professor at NIPFP and as a professor at Icrier.
Gupta holds a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Maryland, USA, and a master’s degree from the School of Economics, University of Delhi.
She won the 1998 Exim Bank Award for her PhD in International Economics.
