Pope Leo was elected Thursday as the first pope born in the United States. CNN reported that the news surprised and delighted many Catholics across the Americas.
At the beginning of the first formal meeting with the Cardinal, the new pope said he chose his papal name and continued along the path of Pope Leo XIII, who spoke of “in the context of the first great industrial revolution, he spoke of “social issues.”
Pope Leo XII ruled the Roman Catholic Church in 1878 until his death in 1903 and was remembered as the Pope of Catholic Social Teaching. In 1891, he wrote a famous open letter to all Catholics, called “novarum” (“Revolutionary Change”), which was reflected in the destruction of the industrial revolution on the lives of workers.
“In our own days, the church provided her social teaching with a response to another industrial revolution and the development of the field of artificial intelligence that poses new challenges to defending human dignity, justice and labor,” the new U.S. clerk said Saturday, citing fluent Italian in CNN.
He wore the white robe of the pope, and he signaled strongly to the Cardinal that his leadership would be based on the legacy of Pope Francis’ church reform and social justice.
