West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee donated a broom to Jagannath Temple in Digha on Tuesday (29 April 2025) and attended Yajna before taking office at the temple on Wednesday (30 April 2025).
“People from all religions, castes and creeds are gathered here. Everyone is our guest. You can’t pass on word of mouth. Religion touches your heart,” Ms. Banerjee told reporters.
The chief minister said that not only the priests from Puri Temple in Odisha and ISKCON Temple in Bangladesh attended the ceremony, but representatives from Adya Peeth, Dakshineswar and Belur Math also arrived at the Digha Temple.
Ms Banerjee said she dedicated the ceremony to the welfare of the people of the country. “I was asked about my ancestry (gotro) When I was doing the ceremony, I said I was doing it for Ma Mati Manush. If the people in my state are happy, I will be happy. ” she said.
Ms. Banejee praised the architectural works of the temple that appeared on the sprawling pink-Sanderstone campus, saying it has become an international tourist destination. She added: “This is undoubtedly a sense of pride in Bangladesh and the entire country.” The day before the inauguration, the yellow flag on the temple was also hung up.
The temple is similar to the 12th-century Jagannath Temple in Puri, and has been built in the past three years and costs Rs 25 billion. Temple complex includes Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum), Natmandir, Jagmohan and Bhog Mandap. At the entrance is a 34-foot-long 18-sided pillar carved from black stone.
The first planned for Jagannath Temple in Digha will be held on Wednesday, after which the temple’s doors will be opened to the public. The ceremony will be broadcast live across the state and Trinamool Congress has arranged in the region so that people can witness the ceremony.
