Throughout a series of successful operations throughout 2024-25, the Southwest Railway (SWR)’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) has intensified its efforts to combat criminal activities on trains, resulting in major seizures and arrests.
As part of Operation Satark, a campaign specifically targeting the illegal transport of alcohol through a rail network, RPF personnel booked 94 cases and arrested two suspects. During these crackdowns, wine worth Rs 13.16 lakh was confiscated.
Operation Nalcos
Operation Narcos, a targeted program for drug trafficking, has achieved even greater success. The RPF team filed 66 cases and arrested 25 people involved in the smuggling of narcotics. The action resulted in an attack of 441.30 kg of Ganja with an estimated market value of Rs 405 crore.
“Drug traffickers tend to abuse long-distance trains to transfer narcotics across state lines, thinking they can evade detection due to the speed and anonymity provided by the railway system,” said a senior Southwest Railway official. “To address this, our surveillance team (equipped with plainclothes officers and sniffing dogs) has been deployed tactically to maintain close monitoring at the train station and internal trains,” he added.
Jeevan Raksha Initiative
In addition to crime prevention, the RPF is actively saving the lives of the Jeevan Raksha initiative, rescuing six male passengers found in dangerous situations in the railway network.
Get lost and discover
In another SWR effort, the force helped passengers retrieve 669 lost or stolen items, collectively known as Rs 4,947 crore. The recycled items include 207 cell phones, 61 laptops, 44 gold ornaments, 58 cash-related retrievals and 290 other luggage items.
“Whether it involves thwarting smuggling operations or ensuring misplaced calls or life-threatening incidents are received immediate attention and our personnel are committed to the safety of passengers. Maintaining the entire station is key to our success,” the official said.
