Ravi Shastri’s keen view on Rohit Sharma’s test retirement

Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket after 11 years, with an average of 4,301 runs ahead of the 2025-27 cycle of ICC World Test Champion in India, lasting 12 centuries and 18 in his fifties.

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri said he believes he will ensure Rohit Sharma recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, where he held the final border against Australia in Sydney earlier this year – the Gawaska Trophy Test. Last week, Rohit finished his exam career with 4,301 runs in 67 games, with an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and a personal best of 212.

As the 2022 Test Captain of India, Rohit led the team in 24 games, winning 12 of which and guiding the team to the runner-up in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final. However, since September of the previous year, it has been a challenging form that has put Rohit’s exam career in an unstable position. During his home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, he managed to surpass his 50 strokes, with an average of only 10.93.

Due to the birth of his son, Rohit returned to the next three tests after his first test in Perth, but struggled to accumulate only 31 runs. This disappointing performance ultimately led to the 38-year-old being eliminated in the final border-Gavaska Trophy Test at Sydney Cricket Stadium in January.

“I saw a lot of Rohit on toss (in the IPL game). You don’t have enough time to speak when tossing. Although I did put my hand on his shoulder in one of the games. I think that was in Mumbai and I told him that if I were the coach, you would never have played in the last Test match.

“You could have been in the last Test game because the series isn’t over yet. And I’m not a guy who throws towels 2-1 at the scoreline. If your mindset is that you feel like you are… that’s not the stage, then you’re leaving a team.”

Shastri went on to explain why Rohit should be in the Test match in Sydney, which was tied 2-1 at the time.

“It was a 30-40 game. That’s exactly what I told him. It’s so spicy in Sydney. He’s the winner of the game in any form.

“If he left, felt the situation, felt the situation and smashed it at the top of 35-40, you would never know. This series would be level. But it’s his own.
