Padma Shri Award winner Baba Sivanand dies in Varanasi

Padma Shri Award winner spiritual guru Baba Sivanand died here due to health complications. His disciples claimed that he was 128 years old.
Baba Sivanand was taken to BHU Hospital on April 30 but had some health problems. He died on Saturday night (May 3, 2025).
His body has remained at his residence in the Kabir Nagar colony to give people a tribute. His last ritual will be held later tonight, the disciples said.
They say Baba Sivanand was born on August 8, 1896 in what is now the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, when he lost his parents' hunger at the age of six.
They said he has followed a life of austerity and discipline since then, eating only half of his stomach.
After his parents died, he was appointed as his guardian and mentor Omkarnand's care. Under his guidance, Baba Sivanand received spiritual education and teachings of life.
Baba Sivanand was recognized for his contribution to yoga and spirituality, awarded in 2022 with Padma Shri.
His disciples attributed his lifespan and steady health to his disciplined lifestyle. They said he woke up at 3 a.m. every day, practiced yoga, and managed all the trivia alone.
He only ate food and slept on the mat. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath pays homage to the yoga master and prays for his salvation.
“Sadly, the famous yoga master of Kashgar'padma shri'Swami Shivanand JIHe made an unparalleled contribution to the field of “yoga” and he passed away. Say tribute to him humbly! ” he wrote on X.
“Your Sadhana and your life full of yoga is a huge inspiration for the whole society,” he added.
