According to the Central Electric Power Administration (CEA), the total installation capacity capacity in Tamil Nadu is 42,772.20 MW, an increase of 42,772.20 MW from the previous year’s 39,805.97 MW.
Of the total capacity this year, coal-fired power capacity is 12,835.49 MW. Of these, 4,320 MW are from the state sector, 5,490.17 MW are from the private sector, and 3,025.32 MW from the central sector.
The lignite-based heat capacity in Tamil Nadu is 1,959.16 MW, with the central sector contribution of 1,709.16 MW and 250 MW from the private sector.

The capacity of gas-based power plants is 1,027.18 MW, 524.08 MW comes from the state-owned sector and 503.10 MW in the private sector. The private sector diesel-based power capacity is 211.70 MW. As of March 31, the state’s overall thermal capacity was 16,033.53 MW.
At the latest meeting of the Tamil Nadu Electric Power Regulatory Commission (TNERC) on the status of the ongoing and upcoming generation projects in the state, the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Company official (TNPGCL) said the commercial operation date of the North Chennai Thermal Project, the North Chennai Thermal Project Phase-III (1x800mw) and Udal thermod pothape-a ahl a atheral Power power-imi heal theral Power-iiiii (2) 2025 itself.
According to CEA data, 1,448 MW of nuclear power capacity comes from central departments.
As of March 31, the state’s renewable energy installation capacity was 25,290.67 MW. Of these, 11,739.91 MW comes from wind power, 10,153.58 MW comes from solar power, and 2,178.20 MW comes from Hydro Projects. Biomass and biogenerating slag-sauce power plants account for the rest of the renewable energy.
Gujarat leads wind capacity for the second time in a row with a capacity of 12,677.48 MW.
TNPGCL officials also told TNERC that the commercial operation date of the Kundah Pump Storage Hydropower Project (4 x 125 MW) will be achieved by itself in 2025.
TNERC recommends that TNPGCL arrange sufficient manpower according to CEA specifications to run new projects smoothly.
