McIlroy became emotional as he admitted his parents during the Butler Hut ceremony. “I want to say hello to my mom and dad, they’re back home in Northern Ireland. I can’t wait to see them next week and celebrate this with them.”
Then he spoke to his poppy. “They have been through this process with me. They know the burden of having to come here every year to try again. One thing I said to my daughter Poppy will never give up your dreams. Never give up your dreams. Never give up your dreams. Keep working hard, keep working hard, if you rest assured, do anything, you can do anything.”
McIlroy’s feat in the 2025 Masters comes after he missed the 14 years he won the 2011 championship. He is now the sixth golfer in history to win all four major titles, joining the roster of outstanding golfers, including Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
But for McIlroy, the road to the title is not easy. Even though he started his final day with a two-shot lead, his recent rival Justin Rose made a comeback with a fierce counterattack in the first and 13th hole double bogey.
On the 17th hole, McIlroy birdie restored the lost ground, and on the first playoff hole (and the 18th playoff hole and the 18th playoff hole), McIlroy’s goal shot fell within the range of the kick, bringing the game into the playoffs. Ross missed his birdie putt and won McIlroy. “I have to go buy a green jacket!” McIlroy screamed after the final putt.
