After facing setbacks, Kanwaljit also tried his luck in the merchant navy, but he also had to refuse there. Kanwaljit encountered the admission form for Pune FTII due to two major failures. He submitted the form, went to Delhi for an audition, and was eventually selected by the institution. Kanwaljit joined the Academy of Film and Television (FTII) in Pune and became an exquisite artist.

Kanwaljit married actress Anuradha Patel, who mainly plays Rekha’s close friend. Anuradha is the daughter of Virendra Patel and Bharti Jaffrey and the granddaughter of Ashok Kumar.
