NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams returned to Earth in SpaceX capsules Tuesday, with their flawed Boeing company Starliner Craft rising to a week’s stay in the International Space Station after a soft splash on the Florida coast. Their return limits a protracted space mission, teeming with uncertainty and technical hassles, and turns NASA’s contingency plan (and Starliner’s latest failure) into a global wonder. Wilmore and Williams are two veteran NASA astronauts and retired U.S. Navy test pilots who became Starliner’s first crew in June, becoming an eight-day test mission. However, problems with Starliner’s propulsion system led to delays in their return home, and ultimately decided to get them back to SpaceX Craft this year, part of the agency’s crew rotation schedule.
