Mumbai police officials said Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused in the Mumbai terrorist attack, had helped accomplice David Coleman Headley obtain an Indian visa. The National Bureau of Investigation (NIA) formally arrested Rana on Thursday night, who was taken to India after “successfully extraditioned” in the United States. A special court in Delhi then detained him under the custody of the institution for 18 days.
Rana served in the Pakistan Army Medical Team before immigrating to Canada in the late 1990s and founded an immigration consulting company. He later moved to the United States and established an office in Chicago.
Through his company, Rana covered up a scout mission in Mumbai before the November 2008 attack and helped him obtain a ten-year visa extension, police officials said Thursday.
Headley used the front end of his immigration business during his stay in India and had regular contact with Rana. The official said there were more than 230 calls between the two during this period.
According to the NIA charge sheet, Rana also kept in touch with another attacker co-collider during the period. Lana herself visited India a few days before the terrorist attack in November 2008.
According to the charge form filed by Mumbai police against Lana in 26/11 assault case in 2023, he lived in a hotel in Powai and discussed the crowded areas in southern Mumbai and was with the person listed as witnesses in the case.
Subsequently, some of these were Pakistani terrorists who claimed 166 lives in a deadly attack.
Terrorists targeted several iconic locations in Mumbai, including the Taj Mahal and Oberoi Hotels, Leopold Cafe, Chabad House and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Terminus Train Stain Station, Headley all scouted in advance.
