Saroj Ghose, founding director of the National Science Museum (NCSM), and father of the Indian Science Museum movement, died at 89 years old.

NCSM said in a press release: “Dr. Ghose breathed at 89 in Seattle, USA on May 17, 2025 at 11:35 a.m. Pacific Time.

Ghose served as Director General of NCSM from 1979 to 1997. He is remembered as an architect of the Indian Science Centre and Museum Network.

“He envisioned and implemented the development of a decentralized model of science museums across India, making science accessible, interactive and inspiring millions,” the news report added.

Goss continued to borrow his expertise after retirement, and some of his contributions after serving as Director General of NCSM were the City Hall Museum in Kolkata. New Delhi Parliament Museum; and New Delhi’s Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum.

NCSM said: “In his death, India lost a visionary man who laid the foundation for the scientific temper in society through informal education. NCSM paid a heartfelt tribute to his legacy and remains committed to providing a democratic science mission for all.”

NCSM is headquartered in Kolkata and was founded in 1978. An autonomous society under the leadership of the Alliance Ministry of Culture, manages 26 science centers and museums in the north, south, east, northeast and western regions, including seven centers at the national level.
