Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the government on Thursday (April 17, 2025) under the working conditions of locomotive pilots, saying that working under “inhuman” conditions is not only an injustice to them, but also a safety for passengers traveling by train.

Mr Gandhi also shared a media report on X, which claimed that the railway rejected the need for rest and quoted women staff as saying they had to perform eight hours of duty without toilet facilities.

“Last year, when I met a railway locomotive pilot, I was very worried about knowing their condition – a 14-hour shift, a continuous night shift, not enough rest, no food breaks and no toilet facilities.”

“After the accident, the railway shrugged by calling it ‘human error’ but did not explain how to get employees to work in an inhuman way,” the former president of Congress said.

He claimed that their basic requirements were fixed working hours and a better environment, but the government formed a committee just to perform and had no intention of finding a solution.

“Even demands for demands like food and toilet breaks are now rejected and said ‘it’s impractical’. It’s not only an injustice to robot pilots, but also a safety for passengers traveling by train,” Gandhi said.

“It’s a fight for justice, and we’re with the motorcycle pilots – as long as the government remains deaf and dumb, we will continue to raise our voices.”
