MA Infant is elected Secretary-General of CPI (M)

Politburo member Ma Baby was elected as the new secretary-general of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
The party’s 24th Congress ended in Madurai on Sunday (6 April 2025) and also elected an 18-member Politburo of eight new members. Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan was exempted from the age restricted party position at 75 for serving as Chief Minister of Kerala.

Born on April 5, 1954 in Kerala, Massachusetts, the son of Alexander and Lilly Alexander, he developed an early interest in politics during his school year at Prakkulam, NSS high school.
This initial spark grew stronger and stronger when he attended SN University in Kollam, and he actively participated in student politics for the years before the semester and later became a BA, a student in political science. When he became a key member of organizations such as the Kerala Student Union and the Democratic Youth Federation of India, his involvement in the student and youth movement played a key role in shaping his political career. His student days were crucial to shaping him into a leader and giving him a deeper understanding of political issues.
He is the all-Indian president of the Student Union of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). Later, he became a member of the CPI Central Committee (M). When he started as a member of Rajya Sabha from 1986-1998, he represented the Kundara Conference section in Kollam from 2006 to 2016.
Mr Baby served as Minister of General Education and Culture of the Kerala Government from 2006 to 2011, with particular attention to his tenure. He was an outstanding figure in CPI(M) and was elected to the Politburo in 2012. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, he competed from Kollam constituency but lost to NK Premachandran of the Revolutionary Socialist Party. In addition to his political role, Mr. Baby is also a writer who has written books on different topics such as Noam Chomsky, youth movement and education.
