The Sealdah branch of the Eastern Railway will designate several parent island coaches for ordinary passengers. Matribhumi locals are exclusively targeting female passengers, and in the past few years, they have proposed to allow ordinary passengers on local trains.
According to the Sealdah department, it has been closely monitoring the occupancy rate of Matribhumi locals and noting that the special trains of these ladies are not running at full capacity. Recently, the railway department has served more than 1.8 million passengers a day, enabling infrastructure development, thus transforming all 900 odd services into 12-car EMU Rakes, from the early nine-car EMU Rakes.
“Given the overall capacity enhancement, it has also been checked that female commuters can have a comfortable and convenient travel experience, even some Matribhumi locals can be assigned as general coaches among male passengers,” the Eastern Railways news report said.
However, male passengers will not allow all local train coaches to allow, and some coaches will be retained as female coaches. “To simplify passenger movement, reduce congestion and improve overall train operations, Sealdah Division will soon inform male passengers that will also be able to board a handful of coaches dedicated to Matribhumi locals,” the statement from the Sealdah Division said.
About 25% of passengers in the Sealdah branch are female passengers, and ladies have been in demand to increase the number of coaches with the two existing coaches.
“The percentage of women in proportion is 25%, and it was converted to 3 coaches at No. 12 coaches. So half of the third coaches on both ends have changed from a regular coach to a lady coach. So one coach (female passenger) added to the Sealdah Division.”
