Kuki leadership sets premises ahead of peace talks held in Delhi on April 5

The Ministry of Home Affairs of New Delhi convened the Kuki leadership in Kangpokpi district of Manipur has established three preconditions, including no cross-sports between Meitei and Kukis in other communities.

The three conditions were set up at an advisory meeting held by the Tribal Solidarity Committee (COTU) on Tuesday in Kangpokpi, Chairman of the Kuki Zo Committee (KZC).

The three preconditions, Thanglet said, are “The movement of Meitei individuals in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas and vice versa, should be strictly restricted, hostilities should be stopped within a minimum of six months to facilitate negotiations, and a structural formal and meaningful dialogue process must be initiated during the ceasefire.”

Staff of the Kuki Zo committee said the coalition’s interior ministry called for a meeting between the Kuki Zo and Meitei groups in New Delhi on April 5.

More than 250 people have been killed since May 2023, and thousands have left homeless among most Metis in the Iphar Valley and the Kuki-Zo tribes adjacent to the hills.

The violence began after the “tribal solidarity march” was organized in the Hill area to protest the demand for the Metti community for the status of the scheduled tribe (ST). The central government has made many efforts to bring warring communities to the negotiation table. After N Biren Singh resigned as chief minister, the center implemented the presidential rule in the state on February 13.
