Shankar Jiwal ensures Sagayam is safe

:

Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal assured that retired IAS officer U. Sagayam will provide appropriate security – depending on the threat (if any) that allows him to testify in court without fear.

Mr Sagayam was appointed as a special official by the Madras High Court, who excavated a major granite mining scam. Last March, the Madurai Special Court summoned him in an illegal granite mining case, during which time he said he was unable to go to Madurai to provide evidence in the aforementioned court due to safety concerns. He also said that withdrawing security to him was obviously biased, flawed and unfair.

In a statement, DGP said that when Mr. Sagayam served as the Legal Commissioner to detect irregularities in illegal granite mining, he was granted a personal safety officer starting from November 2, 2014 and continued until October 2020, but between October 2020 and October 2020. However, it continues to be provided in accordance with the instructions of the High Court. Mr. Sagayam subsequently voluntarily retired on 2 January 2021.

According to the Security Review Committee meeting held on March 20, 2023, it was decided to withdraw the security provided by 22 people based on the current situation. Therefore, Mr. Sagayam withdraws security because he does not face any specific threat.

He then submitted a statement to the Chennai Police Chief on 30 May 2023, requesting the restoration of security. However, the DGP at the time sent him a reply in December 2023, saying that the security was withdrawn in accordance with the Commission's decision.
