The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Monday (29 April 2025) recommended that the Tamil Nadu government pay Rs 22 compensation to Jayaram Venkatesan, the convener of the Ayaram convener, while the police reported in July 2018.

SHRC member V. Kannadasan also advised the state government to recover Rs 11 each from the accused police officers (inspectors of police officers Devaraj and Kavitha) and then attach to the Taramani police station in Chennai.

Mr Venkatesan said in the complaint that on July 13, 2019, Taramani police illegally detained 11 volunteers from Arapport Iyakkam for a field trip to Kallukuttai Lake. The case later registered them with a stupid complaint.

He argued that police lawsuits violated the basic rights of citizens and that he sought disciplinary action against the officials involved. Mr Venkatesan further sought compensation from each volunteer detained.

The SHRC’s Investigation Department submitted a report that the then-deputy inspector of the Taramani Police Department conducted a case against members of the Iyakkam Hawaii at the time of the inquiry’s start. The case was from No. 18Th Sayed Metropolitan District Court, later held by the High Court in its order in March 2021.

A policeman filed a complaint and registered a case, the report said, which amounted to “abuse of his police power.” SHRC sent a subpoena to respondents, who gave them a counter. After considering complaints, objection statements, proof affidavits and marked exhibits, SHRC said respondents considered to be 1 and 2 that violated the human rights of 11 volunteers from NGOs.
