Congress asked Assam Parliament Speaker Biswajit Daimary to launch a privilege to rule BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Sunday (March 23, 2025) to allegedly attempting to physically attack opposition legislators and invade them physically in the House.

It also urged a spokesman to ban Mr. Kurmi from attending the General Assembly until the committee filed a report in violation of privileges against the MLA and asked Daimary to respond before the next House work on Monday morning.

The leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia insisted in a letter to Mr Daimary that Mr Kurmi’s actions were unprecedented in the history of the Assam Parliament.

Mr. Kurmi spitted with the opposition MLA during a discussion in the House on Friday (March 21). He used a commissioner who was later removed from the litigation records to impose verbal abuse on them.

He also rushed to the opposition bench, and the marshal kept him from getting closer.

Former MP Kurmi, who has been congressing since 2006, moved to the BJP in 2021.

BJP Governor Dilip Saikia has asked Mr. Kurmi to make a public apology for the matter.

Debabrata Saikia said Congress avoided sabotage proceedings after a 10-minute strike on Friday, as the ruling bench is expected to be held later on a party-wide meeting where all parties can make their statements, but that didn’t happen.

He claimed that Mr. Kurmi’s actions had been widely criticized in all respects, and many questioned the sanctity of the Assembly.

Congress leader said he not only lashed out and abused the opposition MLA in the House, including Mr. Secchia, but later threatened to take a more aggressive stance.

Mr Sekiya said Kurmi’s “repeated threat” has led to fear in the opposition MLA.

“We therefore ask you to violate the privileges of the legislator and decide what action to take against him, under Rule 158 of the Rules and Procedure Rules and Procedure Rules, against the rules and procedures of the Parliament, and to decide what action to take against him.”

“Until the Commission investigates violations of Kurmi’s privileges, we ask you not to allow him to attend the General Assembly,” Secia added.

Congress leaders noted that the opposition was confident about the Speaker’s impartiality and he asked Mr. Demarie to meet his decision again by 9.30 a.m. on Monday.
