Paulina Prieto, 36, turned wrongly to traffic at an intersection in Melbourne Citylink at about 2 a.m. Friday.
Ms Prieto’s car collided head-on with a truck inside the tunnel and she was seriously injured. The truck driver was not injured.
The single mother experienced momentary confusion after making the wrong turn in the CityLink system before the crash.
Family friend Sebastian Alberti said there was no sign of reminding Ms Prito that she was driving along the wrong side of the tunnel.
“We think if she had been driving the wrong way for such a long time, there would be some sign or some signal or some kind of alarm to let her know or other drivers.” 7news.
Ms Prieto’s daughter, 14-year-old Monse Romero, said she missed her “best friend”.
‘My heart just stopped. I really don’t know what to think. She had a hard time coming back to me and wasn’t kidding,” she said.
