Police said on Sunday (April 13, 2025) that 12 more people were arrested and three died in connection with violent protests in the WAQF (Amendment) Act in the Merhidabad area of ​​West Bengal.
They said there was no new violence anywhere in most Muslim areas and security forces maintained a vigil.

“The situation in the Suti, Delian, Samel Ganj and Janjipur regions in the area is peaceful. The raid continued overnight and 12 more people were arrested. So far, 150 people have been arrested.”
He said the injunction order under Article 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been imposed in areas where violence is subject to violence and the internet has been suspended.
He added that security forces are inspecting vehicles on major roads and patrolling sensitive pockets.
“The violence is under investigation. More arrests may be available,” the official said.

Several vehicles, including police, caught fire, stones were thrown at security forces and roads were blocked Friday during protests against new legislation. Some outbreaks were also reported on Saturday.
Amid the violence, the body of a man and his son were found with multiple stab wounds at their home in Jafrabad in Samel Ganj on Saturday. They were identified as Harogobindo Das and Chandan Das, according to police.

They said a 21-year-old man was identified as Ijaz Momin, who died Saturday after being injured during a clash in Sajur, Suti on Friday.
At least 18 police officers were injured in the violence on Friday.
DGP Rajeev Kumar arrived in Samserganj on Saturday night to hold a meeting with senior officials and took stock of the situation.
