India “pushed back” Bangladesh without documents

Rajasthan Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs Jogaram Patel said in Jaipur that about 1,000 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were identified as living in different parts of the state. “The first Bangladesh nationals were transported to Jodpur and flew to Kolkata on Wednesday (May 14, 2025). From there, they will be deported to Bangladesh,” Patel said.

Sources said most of the detainees brought to Jodbur were from the Sika district. The rural development officials training centre in Jodpur has been temporarily transformed into a detention center for Bangladesh nationals. Mr Patel said similar eviction procedures will be followed in the next few days.

On May 10, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at a press conference in Guwahati that the government has decided to implement a “delay” mechanism to check infiltration rather than through legal means.

“Infiltration is a big problem. We now decide that we will not conduct legal proceedings. The earlier decision was to arrest a person and then take him to the legal system of India… Earlier, we also used to arrest 1,000-1,500 foreigners… They had to be sent to prison and then they were sent to court and then they were taken to a country and we would take them to this country because they would become a new country because they would become a new one and we would become a new phenomenon. Withdrawing this number will now be minimized,” said Mr. Salma.

Regarding the concerns raised by Bangladesh, the government official above said: “These are their citizens and they should accept them.”

After political changes in Bangladesh occurred on the instructions of the Union’s Ministry of Interior in August 2024, states began to suppress foreigners who remained in the country illegally. Officials said momentum has increased following the April 22 terrorist attack on Pahargan.

The total length of the India-Bangladesh border is 4,096.7 km, of which 3,232.21 km are fences.
