About 200 patients were evacuated from the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode on Friday night after the smoke engulfed the casualty building. Fire and rescue service personnel arrived at the scene and managed to put out the smoke-causing fire in the Ups room.
An initial assessment of fire service is that short circuits may have caused the fire. Health Minister Veena George has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The fire started around 8 p.m. after the UPS room exploded.
The patients with severe illness were transferred to a nearby hospital.
The hospital principal, Sreejayan, said the situation was under control.
