Government procures 3,40,000 tons of TUR under price support program

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the government has purchased 3,40,000 tons of TUR (PIGEON PEA) under the Price Support Program (PSS). Under the plan, TUR procurement is being made at the lowest support price (MSP). The ministry has approved 1.322 million tonnes of TUR procurement in nine states.

The government’s goal is to maintain a 1 million ton TUR buffer stock released in the open market to check prices.

According to the Ministry’s data, as of April 13, TUR procurement has reached 3,40,000 tons.
Karnataka contributed its largest purchase share at 1,30,000 tons, where farmers received a state bonus of Rs 450 per quintal, higher than MSP, with Rs 7,550 per punch.

Other contributing countries include Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

The government also mainly comes from 17,000 tons of Chana (Gram) from Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. Despite the approval of 2.7 million tonnes of Chana purchase, the purchase price is still slow as the domestic price exceeds the 10% import tax as the domestic price exceeds the MSP of Rs 5,650 per quintal. As of April 13, Masur (Lentil) has purchased 28,700 tons and 3,000 tons of Moong (Green Gram).

When the market price of certain agricultural commodities is lower than MSP, the PSS begins.

In the 2025 budget, the government promises national production through central agencies until 2028-29, procurement of tur, Masur and Urad reached 100% to achieve self-sufficiency in Pulses production.

Despite the increase in domestic production in recent years, India continues to rely on imports to meet the shortage in domestic pulse supply.
