NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams are preparing for their return to Earth after spending nine months on the International Space Station (ISS). NASA cites “favorable conditions” and the duo is scheduled to return to Earth sooner Tuesday night than previously reported schedules.

Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams will be transported home with another American astronaut and a Russian astronaut and on the SpaceX crew dragon boat, the craft arrived at the ISS earlier Sunday. Williams and Wilmore have been testing their virgin crew since June, having problems with propulsion and being deemed unsuitable to fly them back to Earth.

“NASA and SpaceX met on Sunday to assess weather and splash conditions on the Florida coast to return to the agency’s Agency’s Agency Mission from the International Space Station. Mission Manager targeted an earlier Crew-9 return opportunity for favorable conditions predicted Tuesday night, March 18,” the agency said in a formal statement.

What is the timing for astronauts to splash the ocean?

NASA announced the revised timing for astronauts’ ocean splash near the Florida coast on Sunday, starting at about 5.57 pm (2157 GMT) from the initial Wednesday schedule. “The updated return targets continue to give space station staff time to complete handover duties while providing operational flexibility in weather conditions expected later this week,” NASA said. The Space Agency also announced that they will showcase the returns of Crew-9 Live and share the updated schedule on its website.

Watchwilmore and Williams have now ruled to spend nine months outside the International Space Station (ISS) plan, much longer than the originally scheduled brief visit. They arrived on Boeing’s Starliner in June 2024 because it was a seven-day mission. However, technical issues including propulsion system failures and helium leaks led NASA to return the spacecraft to Earth in September without crew members. This allowed astronauts to extend the station time indefinitely.

NASA revealed that it will be the return of Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore live. Coverage will begin around 10:45 pm ET on Monday and incubation preparations will be made. U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, to do the job after Boeing’s superstar failed to bring back stranded astronauts after Boeing’s multiple attempts.

Although the two astronauts stayed in space longer than the scheduled eight days, they still haven’t smashed the record of America’s longest stay. This still belongs to Frank Rubio, who stayed at the station for 371 days in 2023. The world record was set by Valeri Polyakov of Russia, who stayed at the Mir space station for 437 days between 1994 and 95.
