The Supreme Court dismissed Tamil Nadu’s appeal in the Kannagi-Murugesan honorary murder case on Monday (28 April 2025) and continued to confirm the Madras High Court decision in the case.

The High Court has sentenced one of the offenders to life imprisonment and acquitted all charges. The beliefs and life imprisonment of nine criminals were maintained.

The judge led by Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia awarded Rs 5 lakh compensation to the victim’s family, represented by advocate Rahul Shyam Bhandari.

Kannagi belongs to the Vanniyar community (the most backward class) and has fallen in love with a Murugesan of a predetermined caste while they were studying at Annamalai University in Chidambaram. They came from Puthukkooraippettai Village in the Kuddalore region and they got married secretly and registered their marriage in Cuddalore on May 5, 2003. Kannagi’s family is angry about knowing about marriage.

According to the prosecution, the poison was forced to fall into trouble in the throat of a rural crematorium on July 8, 2003, and their bodies were burned to show that it was a suicide. After a thorough investigation by local police, the investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case of Murugesan’s father. The final report was submitted in 2009.

A special court in Cardalol ruled that 13 people were charged and sentenced to death by the victim’s woman’s brother. The rest were sentenced to life imprisonment.
