Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on Friday with Indian Foreign Minister Dr S Jashankar to discuss growing tensions between India and Pakistan following recent terrorist attacks in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The deadly attack in Pahalgam killed 26 people, mainly tourists, which worsened the already fragile relationship between the two neighboring countries. The incident has attracted global attention, with many world leaders urging the two sides to avoid further conflict and focus on peaceful solutions.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Lavrov and Jashankar spoke about current issues regarding India-Russia relations. A key topic of the conversation was the tension between India and Pakistan following the Pahargam tragedy.
Lavrov suggested that India and Pakistan resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue. He stressed the importance of political and diplomatic efforts, which is the same as the 1972 Shimla Agreement and the 1999 Lahore Declaration. Russia also mentioned that the ministers spoke about the upcoming meeting and the high-level interactions between the two countries, although there was no specific date shared.
After the phone call, Dr Jaishankar posted on X (formerly Twitter), reaffirming India’s position of responsibility for possessing guilt. He said the people responsible for Pahalgam attacks, including attackers, their supporters and planners, must be brought to justice.
