Trump administration wants to cut state department budgets in half and cut foreign aid 75%

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s administration wants to cut the State Department’s budget by half, cutting more than $30 billion, and in fiscal 2026, four U.S. officials familiar with the plan said Monday that the massive reduction, the massive reduction, nearly 30 U.S. missions shut down and foreign aid cuts nearly 75%.

The White House Budget Office (Management and Budget Office) outlined the cuts in response to the State Department’s request for funding for the upcoming fiscal year, which will begin on October 1, sources said.

As part of the plan – the unterminated plan – the government is considering a proposal to close at least 27 missions in Africa and Europe, according to another internal memorandum seen by Reuters. Ten of these tasks were embassies and the rest were consulates.
This document provides ideas on how to move to a low-cost operational model in four other overseas tasks. It also outlines how to merge several multitasking posts such as United Education, Science and Cultural Organization in Paris.

The State Department, the White House and the OMB did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
