Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences Monday after Pope Francis’ death, calling him a symbol of sympathy, humility and spiritual courage.

In a heartfelt message posted on X, PM Modi offers condolences to the Catholic community around the world and pays tribute to the Pope’s lasting legacy.

He wrote: “His Holy Pope Francis will be deeply distressed. In this moment of sorrow and memorial, my heartfelt condolences to the Catholic community around the world. Pope Francis will forever be remembered as a beacon of millions of sympathy, humility and spiritual courage for millions of the world.”

Reflecting on the life and service of the pope, Prime Minister Modi said: “He has been committed to the fulfillment of Christ’s ideals since he was a child. He worked hard to serve the poor and the depressed. For those who suffer, he ignited a spirit of hope.”

Recalling his meeting with Pope Francis, Prime Minister Modi added that Francis’ feelings for the Indian people will always be cherished.

“I recall the meeting with him deeply and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusiveness and all-round development. His feelings for the Indian people will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in the embrace of God,” Prime Minister Modi said on Twitter after Pope Francis’ death.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died Monday at the age of 88 at his residence in Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.
