Woman, husband arrested for stealing Rs 9 million from father’s house

Police said on Tuesday that police arrested three people, including a woman and her husband, in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, who allegedly stole Rs 9 million from her father’s home.

The couple fell into financial troubles and planned theft after learning about the cash stored in one of the rooms. The money was reportedly received from the sale of the property and was lost from the locked home.

Mohammad Sarwar Ahmed sold a warehouse and stored Rs 9 million in the vault in his empty ancestral house. He received a call from his neighbor on April 10 saying the lock of the house was broken. When he arrived at the property, he found the cash missing and immediately reported the burglary to police.
Sarwar told police that his daughter had been to the house that day, recalling her strange behavior and speaking quietly on the phone.

Investigators asked her daughter and husband Azeem, who is a local sports coach. Within a few hours, all confessed to crime.

On the day of theft, Azeem entered the house in the afternoon, undid the cash, and did not notice his wife calling him. The stolen money was distributed to various locations. Azeem hid Rs 4.8 lakh in his residence and handed Rs 1 lakh to his brother Waseem in his health supplement store. He also purchased some of the stolen jewelry. Later, the police arrested three people, Salva’s daughters Azim and Wasim, and recovered about Rs 6 million for the price of the cars used in cash, jewelry and the operation. CCTV videotapes in the area, as well as the trial of the defendants, helped rebuild the timeline and secure confessions.

“We will also write to the income tax department to investigate the origins of Sarwar having such a large amount of cash,” said Haridwar SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal.
