While many listeners find the gesture moving, others question the moral implications of using AI to revive the late voice.

AR Rahman shares his growing perspective on music, and he talks with PTI about the need for balance. He acknowledged that while AI offers exciting creative possibilities, its application in music should be handled with caution, sensitivity and responsibility.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen, blow the cat. Some songs are so dirty, but they carry the voice of popular singers. It needs to be controlled because if it’s not, there’s chaos.”
He further explained: “There are good things and bad things that should be used to empower those who never have the opportunity to take their vision. However, overuse of it in a bad way is not good for us. It’s like mixing poison with oxygen and breathing it. There should be some rules, like some things that you can’t do.
Composer has previously worried about using AI to restore the voice of late singer Lal Salaamclarify that their families were consulted, agreed and compensated for their contribution.
Ar Rahman also responded to criticism from singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who accused him of contributing to the decline of live music and the overwork of technology in his work. Abhijeet believes that Rahman’s reliance on technology is the musicians playing traditional instruments, and the shift to digital music is leaving many instrumentalists without work.
In response, Rahman defended his use of technology, emphasizing that it is not about replacing live musicians, but about enhancing the musical creation process. He added that he fully supports musicians and sees technology as a tool to explore the possibilities of new creative ideas in music.
“I’m glad to blame everything about me. I still like Abhijeet and I’ll give him the cake. And, it’s his point of view, there’s nothing wrong with having someone.”

He also clarified that computers are just tools to design unique harmony that allow him to explore new sounds. On the job side, AR Rahman is reuniting their next major project with Mani Ratnam, thug Life. The highly anticipated film, starring Kamal Haasan, will be released in theaters in India on June 5.
