Port Moresby: On the Richter scale, a massive earthquake had an amplitude of 6.9, hitting the New Britain area in Papua New Guinea earlier on Saturday. According to an article by the National Center for Seismology on X (formerly Twitter), the earthquake occurred on April 5, 2025 at IST 01:34:43.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake centers on 194 kilometers southeast of Kimbe. The center of the earthquake is located at 6.23 degrees south latitude, 151.64 degrees east longitude, and 10 kilometers deep.

The National Center for Seismology said in an article on X: “M: 6.9, on: 05/04/2025 01:34:43 IST, LAT: 6.23 S, LONG: 151.64 E, DEPTH: 10 km, Location, Location: New Britain Region PNG.” The tremor is concentrated in the New England New Guinea region, a region known for its seismic activity because of its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The earthquake prompted the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami warning to Pacific island countries, saying: “Doessive tsunami waves predict certain coasts.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service issued a tsunami threat.

According to USGS, about 30 minutes later, a much smaller earthquake occurred at nearly the same location with an initial amplitude of 5.3. There are no direct details about damage or casualties. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and recommending residents in affected areas to remain vigilant. As more information becomes available, further updates are expected.
