The earthquake was the 6.1 shocking island of Kasos, spread across the eastern Mediterranean | World News

A strong maritime earthquake early Wednesday morning with a 6.1 Richter scale near Kasos on the Greek island, shaking the eastern Mediterranean and sparking regional vigilance, although no damage or injury has been caused so far. As reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was 78 km deep at 1:51 a.m. local time. The epicenter is about 15 kilometers south of Fry, the capital of Casos, and about 112 kilometers from Agios Nikolaos in Crete.

The tremors were particularly intense on nearby islands of Kasos, Karpathos and Crete, and it was reported that proper vibrations were reported to moderate throughout the Dodecanese region. According to BNO News, the impact of earthquakes is also far away in some parts of Israel, Egypt and southwestern Türkiye.

Initial reports suggest moderate tremors near the epicenter, especially Kasos, Karpotos and eastern Crete. Until this reporting period, there were no confirmed structural damage or casualties from local authorities or emergency services.

Greece is located in one of the most active regions in Europe because of a tectonic collision between Africa and the Eurasian plates. The region in question (called the Greek Arc) is historically susceptible to intense seismic activity.

The region is still monitoring possible aftershocks under authorities. Warn people in affected areas to stay alert and accept instructions from local emergency department officials.
