Mumbai: The Mumbai High Court on Thursday asked the law enforcement agency (ED) diamond businessman Mehul Choksi for citizenship. Choksi, a defendant in the Punjab National Bank scam, was arrested in Belgium last weekend, and New Delhi is seeking extradition to India.
The HC filed an inquiry when she heard a petition filed by Choksi, challenging the order from the lower court, rejecting his application for the cancellation of the non-deposit warrant issued to him in a veto case under the ED investigation.
HC wants to know if Choksi is Antigua or a citizen of India. Ed lawyer Hiten Venegaonkar said he is holding dual citizenship in India and Antigua.
Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal refuted this, saying he surrendered to India’s nationality. The court released the matter for consideration on May 2.
