The former Indian World Cup champion hopes the star will replace Rohit Sharma as Test captain. Not Shubman Gill, KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant

On May 7, Rohit Sharma, 38, announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of his outstanding 11-year career in this format.

India’s former World Cup champion Madan Lal advocates Jasprit Bumrah to take over as captain of India’s men’s test team to replace Rohit Sharma. Bumrah, 31, has had the chance to play two matches in the 2024-2025 Border-Gavaskar trophy and in the fifth Test against England in 2022.

In the first Test match in November, Bumrah led India to a 295 victory over Australia, marking their biggest victory in running on Australian soil. In addition, Rohit Sharma chose to take the New Year Test at Sydney Cricket Stadium, allowing Bumrah to lead the side.

Madan Lal, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup champion team, believes that if he is available, the role of Bumrah’s Test Captain should be considered.

“I think Jasprit Bumrah is the right person to lead India. Fitness is another matter, but if he has the right one, he is the first choice,” Lal told PTI Videos.

In the first inning of the Perth Test, Jasprit Bumrah showed off his outstanding skills with a 18-6-30-5 figure, further cementing his performance by playing a total of 15 wickets in three Test matches.

On May 7, Rohit Sharma, 38, announced his retirement from Test cricket, marking the end of his outstanding 11-year career in this format. Rohit’s decision was supported by Madan Lal, who acknowledged that experienced cricketers must think carefully before making such an important choice.

“Look, when a player of this big is brought in, there is no room in the team. They will automatically become the first choice. But the form can come at any time. What about the form? OK, they don’t perform well. But no matter what decision they make about retirement, it’s a personal decision. They must do that, and that’s why they make the decision,” Lal added.

The highly anticipated five-game winning streak between India and England will open on Friday, June 20 at Leeds Headingley.
