Foreign Minister S Jaishankar announced on Thursday, May 15 that the Indian Waters Treaty (IWT) will remain in a state of superiority until Pakistan ends cross-border terrorism. On this day Islamabad urged New Delhi to reconsider its decision to suspend the treaty.

“The Indian Water Treaty has been put on hold until Pakistan’s cross-border terrorism is reliably stopped,” Eam Jaishankar said.

The Indian Water Treaty (IWT) signed between India and Parker in 1960 distributes water from the Indian water system between the two countries. It allocates the eastern rivers (including Satley, Bees and Ravi) to India, while the western rivers include the Indus, Guillem and chenab, including Parker. It is important to point out that India utilizes only 20% of the Indus River water system, while the remaining 80% go to Pakistan.

New Delhi suspended the treaty after the Pahargam terrorist attacks in Jamu and Kashmir, claiming 26 innocent lives. Several key decisions, including the moratorium on the IWT, were announced at a meeting of the Cabinet Security Committee (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as part of a broader strategy to support Pakistan.
