Indian fisherman arrested for illegal fishing dies in Pakistan prison

A 52-year-old Indian fisherman allegedly died of suicide in Malier Prison in Karachi, Pakistan, a prison official said on Thursday (March 27, 2025).

According to the prison principal, Anand was pronounced dead by prison doctors at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. His body has been transferred to the morgue of the Eddie Trust, where formalities are being done.

He added that after the formalities at the government level are completed, the body will be handed over to his family.

Anand has struggled in Malir Cail since February 2022 for being arrested on Pakistan’s territory.

The governments of Pakistan and India regularly communicate with prisoners, mainly poor fishermen, as a good-willed measure. In February 2022, Indian fishermen were handed over to Indian authorities on the Waga border after being released from Maril Prison.

Hussein said most Indian fishermen serving in prison belong to the Jil Sonas region of Gujarat.

According to the Edhi Foundation, Ansar Burney Welfare Trust and government sources, about 190 Indian fishermen are still struggling in Pakistani prisons.

An Eddie Foundation official said many incarcerated Indian fishermen suffered from depression and anxiety due to their situation.

The Edhi Foundation and Ansar Burney Trust coordinated the release and transport of Indian fishermen to the Wagah border and monitored the welfare of these fishermen in prison.
