After a major organization reorganized the Trinamool Congress, the West Bengal Ruler removed 25 regional presidents and district presidents on Friday (May 16, 2025). The party abolished the posts of presidents of Birbhum and Kolkata (Northern) regions, where complaints were the largest.

Over the past few years, the party has been revoked as the Birbhum district president of the Trinamool Congress during the detention period, including the central investigative agency. The party completely abolished the post in the region, instead choosing a core committee of nine members, selected by party chairman Mamata Banerjee himself to oversee the organization. Asish Banerjee, deputy speaker of the state assembly, was appointed chairman of the Birbhum Regional Core Committee.

Trinamool MP Sudip Bandopadhyay from Uttar Kolkata has been removed from office as president of the Organization District of Kolkata. Instead, the organizational affairs in Kolkata (North) will now be handled by a core committee of nine members. Mr. Bandopadhyay was appointed President of the region. Senior Party leader from Marda and MLA Samar Mukherjee has been appointed regional president and serves as vice president of the party. The Mehidabad region, which witnessed community violence last month, also changed, with Abu Taher Khan revoked as regional president.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the party will appoint a new regional president at a Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21, 2025. Ms. Bag, who represents the project’s caste, began her political career as a member of Panchayat in 2013, and her rise in the party’s organization is considered important.

The Trinamool Congress has 35 organizational districts, and in some places, such as the Darjeeling Plain and the 24 Parganas (Barasat), the regional president has not been declared.

The restructuring spanning several regions was seen as Ms. Banerjee’s attempt to implement greater discipline and reduce intra-party factionism. Reorganization is also seen as a balancing act that accommodates old guards and young members. The development is of great significance as it comes ahead of the state’s 2026 parliamentary poll.
