Siddiqullah Chowdhury, Minister of Library and Information Services, said on Thursday that the West Bengal government will file a motion (amendment) against the WAQF (Amendment). Mr Chowdhury, the main minority in the government and a prominent leader of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, said today the protests held in Ram Lila Maidan, Kolkata.
“I received a call from the Chief Minister’s Office; she was satisfied with the rally. CM said the state government will file a motion in Parliament that would not allow the implementation of WAQF laws in the state,” the minister told the protests.

The minister described the gathering as a success and that if Muslims do not protest, their voices will not reach the “necessary dormitory”. Mr. Chowdhury, President of the State Unit of Jamiat-e-ulema Hind, also announced plans to send a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the bill. Before the bill passed, several Muslim groups had organized a march in New York City against WAQF laws.
