According to the Ministry of Education, the prestigious film production schools – the Indian Film and Television Institute, Pune and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata – are awarded status deemed to have been considered to have become a university.

The new status will allow them to earn degrees, not just diplomas, but also doctoral degree programs.

A senior postal official said: “FTII Pune and Srfti Kolkata have been granted under Article 3 of the UGC Act and are deemed to have become university status. This status has been notified in accordance with the recommendations of the University Grants Committee.”

“Both institutions will launch academic programs for PhD, research and innovation. They will also participate in the NIRF rankings and integrate with Academic Banks (ABC). FTII was established by the Indian government in 1960 at the former Prabhat Studios site in Pune. It was formerly known as the Indian Film Academy and was the department of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

In 1971, FTII was known as the “Institute of Film and Television in India” (FTII) and soon began an in-service training program for Indian public broadcaster Doordarshan. The TV Training Wing played a role in New Delhi earlier and moved to Pune in 1974. Since then, the Institute has received complete help from the Information and Broadcasting Department.

In 2017, the Indian University Association (AIU) and the Master’s degree are equivalent to six PG diploma programs at the institute.

Located in Kolkata, the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Academy is named after the legendary master Satyajit Ray, the second national film education center established by the Indian government in 1995 as an autonomous academy of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Currently, the institute has conducted three years of graduate programs in cinemas in six majors in film production and two years of graduate programs in electronic and digital media.
