The judge verbally said in his next hearing on the matter: “At the same time, no tree will be cut down.” On April 3, the Supreme Court recognized the state’s tree-cutting drive in the Kancha Gachibowli forest and called it a “very serious” problem.

It asked the Telangana government to explain the “convincing urgency” of removing large tree covers and to preserve future activities until further orders. Students at the University of Hyderabad are protesting the state government’s plan to develop a 400-acre parcel bordering the university.
