14-year-old girl killed by lion in Kenya

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said a 14-year-old girl was killed by a lion in the suburbs of Nairobi.

According to the Protection Agency, the child was snatched from a residential yard on a ranch next to Nairobi National Park.

The alarm was raised by another teenager and KWS Rangers, following the nearby Mbagati River, where they found the remains of elementary school students.

The lion has not been found yet, but KWS says it has set a trap and deployed a search team to find animals.

The agency added that other security measures have been taken to prevent further attacks.

Nairobi National Park is just 10 km (6 miles) from the city center and is home to animals such as lions, buffaloes, giraffes, leopards and cheetahs.

It is fenced on three sides to prevent animals from roaming into the city, but it opens south to allow animals to move in and out of the area.

Although lions often clash with humans in Kenya, especially on livestock, it is not common for people to be killed.

Last year, CCTV footage captured a moment Lion snatches a Rottweiler from another home near Nairobi National Park.

KWS also reported that a 54-year-old man was killed by an elephant on Saturday. The incident occurred in the central Nyeri country about 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Nairobi.

The elephant grazed in the forest when the elephant attacked the man.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and died of injuries.

Paula Kahumbu, head of the Wildlifedirect conservation team, said the death was not an isolated incident and urged KWS to improve “risk assessments and ensure accurate, real-time communication of wildlife movement and behavior, especially in known high-risk areas such as Savannah Ranch, such as the killing of 14-year-olds.

She also said that all huts, camps and residential developments near areas where wildlife live should be “equipped with anti-invasion deterrent systems including lighting, alerts, secure fences and anti-cultivator sprays.”

“Prevention is our first and best defensive route,” she added.
