Vice President JD Vance said the United States hopes India will respond to the Pahalgam terrorist attacks in a way that will not lead to “wider regional conflicts” and hopes that Pakistan and New Delhi will “hun” militants from their lands at times. Mr. Vance made these remarks in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, May 1, 2025. Vance and his family made a four-day visit to India when the attack (the worst case since the 2019 Pulwama strike).

“Our hope is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that won't lead to wider regional conflict,” Vance said in Fox News' “Special Report” program. After being asked if he was concerned about India and Pakistan, Mr Vance said, “Well, of course, I'm worried about seeing a hot spot burst any time, especially between two nuclear forces.”

“Obviously, we are in close contact with our friends in India and Pakistan. We hope India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that will not lead to wider regional conflicts,” the vice president said. “Frankly, we want Pakistan to work with India on the scope they are responsible to ensure that terrorists sometimes operate and respond to their territory. That's how we want this to happen, and obviously we'll be in close contact. We'll see what happens,” Mr Vance said.

Mr Vance has intensified tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahargam attack, with 26 people killed. Mr. Vance, who was in India last month, subsequently condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the victims and their families in a post on X.
