Under pressure to curb Rajput’s anger, Akhilesh Yadav, chairman of the Sama Wadi Party, spins towards symbolic politics by invoking Maharana Pratap. On Friday, Yadav announced that if his party was voted for power, it would install the towering statue of Maharana Pratap, a sword made of gold, on the Gomti Riverfront in Lucknow.The news came strongly against the remarks of party MP Ramji Lal Suman against the historical Rajput Rana Sanga. The comments sparked widespread protests by Karni Sena, with demonstrations erupting across Uttar Pradesh. Yadav was originally stood by Suman, which further angered the Rajput community.
With the election coming, Yadav is now trying to control the damage. At the press conference, he also recalled that it was the SP government that had previously announced a day off to commemorate Maharana Pratap. He asked the state’s current BJP government to add it to a two-day holiday.
